New Year and the Alcohol Scourge
Last night, I watched the two fireworks displays from Mrs Macquarie's Chair overlooking our magnificent Sydney Harbour. The spectacle, as always, is one of the countless good reasons to be grateful for living in the greatest country in the world.
Sadly, such occasions are plagued by the misuse of alcohol. While the vast majority of the 25,000 strong crowd was well-behaved, there was also a significant number who were drunk to the point of annoyance.
I hate alcohol! It is the worst substance known to man. When some silly drunk bitch, teetering around with a bottle of wine, spilt a substantial amount on me, I was reminded of our inconsistent laws and how alcohol has been socially acceptable for such a long time.
There has been so much talk in the news recently about the drug 'ice'. So much so, that NSW Premier Morris Iemma, recently hosted a summit on crystal methamphetamine.
In September, NSW Police Commissioner Ken Moroney, referred to ice as "the scourge of our age', and a few days back I heard 2GB announcer Jim Ball, stupidly call ice "the scourge of all time".
Rubbish! Rubbish! Rubbish! Grow up!
These same dopey people continue to target Marijuana, and ignore the reality that alcohol is the most destructive of all substances. What gets me about Ken Moroney's statement is that it's political. His job is to enforce the law, not to make personal comments. Perhaps he should spend more time cracking down on alcohol, or following up on why a COPS Event (E27262637) that I reported, has not received any attention. I mentioned this Event in another post on November 19, 2006.
When I see the crowds at New Year celebrations getting carried away on booze - vomiting, being aggressive, swearing, and falling over (all of this in full view of young families and children), I see no reason why people who want to smoke a joint or have some 'ice' can't do so. Let them haul out their syringes and have a 'shot'. How would this possibly make the situation worse?
The vast amount of money spent on fighting an infantile and unwinnable war on drugs, is inconsistent with the absolute freedom to use alcohol.
I'm glad my mom, friend and I celebrated the coming of 2007 with some ice and coke.
